Cara had been excused from her geography class early due to her having finished all of the required work, including work that was scheduled for the rest of the week.
"Hey, Tia." She greeted the chestnut thoroughbred with a smile. "How would you like a nice long groom?" She asked as she let herself into the stall. "Back." Placing her fingers on the mare's nose, she asked her to move backward away from the door with a kissing noise. "There's a good girl." Placing the halter over the mare's nose, she fastened it around her neck.
Leaving the stall, she went to the tack room and returned moments later with the mare's grooming kit. "Good girl." She said as she clipped the lead rope into place, took the hoof pick out of the kit and asked the mare to lift the hoof of her near foreleg, placing a shallow bin under the hoof to catch the muck being picked out.
Once she had picked out the hoof, she moved onto the next. Once all the hooves were cleaned out, she opened the door slightly and pushed the bin just outside the door so that there was no chance of it being tipped over inside the stall.
It didn't take long to give the mare a thorough grooming with the selection of brushes in the kit, and finally she used a cloth to polish up the mare's red coat until she shone like gold. "There you go, beautiful." She said as she undid the mare's halter and slipped it off her nose. "I'll just put your things away and see who else needs a little company.
She left the stall and returned the mare's kit and halter to the tack room. "Who else should I go see?" She asked the row of halters and kits with their owner's name above them. "How about Fox?" She collected the halter and headed to his stall.
"Hey, handsome." She greeted the bay stallion who was standing so close to his stall door that with the slightest shift of his weight he could easily break the door. "You need to back up." She told him in a no-nonsense voice as she looked the horse in the eye, letting him know right from the word go that he she was in charge and even with the size difference, she was going to make him move and not the other way around. "Back!" She repeated as she stepped forward.
The stallion looked at the small human, his ears flicking back and forth as he decided whether she was worth his time.
Cara stepped forward again and placed her fingers on Fox's nose as she had Tia's. "Back." She repeated again as she squeezed. She knew that what she was doing wasn't going to hurt him, but it was uncomfortable, and the way to relieve the discomfort, was for him to step backward. "Good boy." She praised as he backed away from her fingers. Be as solid as a fencepost, but remember a fencepost doesn't follow the horse. She smiled as she entered the stall and asked the horse to drop his head for the halter before she slipped it over his nose and fastened it around his neck.
